Wedding
Floral Design

Floral design was our first love in the wedding industry, and it remains one of our biggest muses in the big picture of wedding design. Flowers are a microcosm of weddings: they’re ephemeral. They are a symbol of the sacredness of a phase of life that is so beautiful and so fleeting. We know we have done our job to perfection if your wedding floral design reminds you to stop and intentionally savor the moment on what can otherwise be a blurry whirlwind of a day.

I had Kelsey and Michael do my florals for my wedding, but they did so much more than the flowers! From my first meeting with Kelsey, she asked me tons of questions about how she could capture my relationship with my partner and contribute best to the vibe I wanted on my day. She delved into symbolism and history with me, coming up with meaningful combinations of flowers she could use to describe our love. Not only was that so incredibly interesting, it was stunning and enchantingly meaningful.

Before speaking with Kelsey I was completely unaware of what interpretive floral design was, but I am so glad I was introduced. You will receive so much more than just flowers, every bloom represents something about you, your partner, and your story all beautifully explained and shown in your personalized plan. I cannot say enough how wonderful it was to work with Semperflora and how special it was that our florals had a story to tell!

Kelsey & Michael were our florists for a mountain wedding in August 2022 and they were incredible! I saw a bouquet they had made with feathers on Instagram and knew that was exactly what I wanted! I asked for fall colors, specifically rust orange and feathers. They gave us sample photos of what we could expect before we put down a deposit and the bouquets were even better than I’d hoped for! They also accommodated a last minute request for an arch installment and flowers for my hair. On our wedding day they arrived on time and finished the arch without me having to worry about anything. I couldn’t recommend Semperflora enough!

Our Philosophy

Floral design was the first thing I loved enough to not quit. For 18 years I tried sports, arts, jobs, and extracurriculars galore, but each of them failed to capture me beyond a few years. I didn't know it then but I was holding out for a much bigger purpose for my life. When floral design came into my life on a whim, it gripped me in a way I could tell was different than anything before it. Semperflora was born from that transformation, leading us into the world of weddings where I found an even deeper calling in designing for meaningful events with meaningful materials.

Looking back, it makes perfect sense that floral design ended up being the discipline to ground me in purpose. As a neurodivergent child that struggled with verbal communication, I learned to speak by identifying flowers and plants on walks with my mom. Some of my first words were "daffodil," "bleeding hearts," and "coral bells." I wouldn't come to fully understand how much the "language of flowers" would mean to me until I started infusing it into every design for our wedding clients. Two decades later, flowers are still the most meaningful way I communicate with the world, and now I help our clients do the same with their wedding flowers.

Hi I'm Kels!

In the early days of Semperflora when we spent our summers designing our first installations together, well-meaning wedding guests would frequently make jokes about me being Kels' helper. The handyman, the one to carry the heavy buckets, the stem picker-upper. But that was never our dynamic. Those guests had no clue that Kels had been calling me her "flower boy" since high school. Long before we started a floral design business, I was the one to tend to my family's flower garden, growing cuttings into thriving indoor plants, and pressing wildflowers to send Kels in the mail during a period of long-distance in our relationship.

I've been expressing love and care with flowers all my life. It's a distinct privilege to now be able to express that love and care to each and every one of you, our clients. Not only do the flowers speak for themselves as a gift, but the nature of floral design allows me to show love through acts of service. As a florist I have secured a wooden arch to stay standing during a ceremony in 40 mph winds, bloodied my fingers hand tying hundreds of stems to tiny metal picks and stabbing them in the ground, changed a flat tire at lightning speed to deliver a flower order on time, and gotten more creative with zip ties and tent stakes than I ever did as an Eagle Scout. Something about floristry has a tendency of revealing the holes in plans on wedding days, and I have a tendency to patch them up before you even hear about it.

Interpretive design is the practice of breaking a concept into its defining elements and re-interpreting them into a different medium. It facilitates personal connection to design.

For your wedding, this looks like taking the big picture of you and your partner’s relationship, your shared lifestyle, passions, values, and family dynamics and then matching those elements to flowers with correlated meanings. The symbolic language of flowers + your wedding aesthetic + color psychology from your color palette combine to form a completely unique floral recipe that’s both aesthetically and symbolically aligned with you, your partner, and your combined family. Flowers are always beautiful, but they can also be meaningful. Interpretive design adds a layer of richness and significance that tells a story through your wedding floral design, and yes, we do believe it makes a difference, and so do our past clients.

FAQ's

Once you submit the inquiry form, you can expect to hear back from us within 24-48 hours to schedule a consultation. Standard turnaround time for a detailed custom quote and visual guide is two weeks from the consultation date.

How long can we expect to wait for a floral or other design quote?

For florals specifically yes. We have an abundant supply of floral vessels and installation structures available for rent. We do not rent candles, votives, hurricane glasses, or other non-floral decor. For non-floral rental items we may connect you with one of our preferred local rental vendors.

Do you offer rentals

Sustainability is at the forefront of our floral design choices. We plan for events with detailed recipes for each type of design to minimize actual floral waste. We also plan those recipes with seasonal availability in mind and source from farms first whenever possible. We avoid traditional floral foam entirely or use a biodegradable substitute, avoid using bleached or otherwise chemically preserved materials, forage responsibly when possible, and encourage clients to rent our reusable containers instead of buying new. Floral design inherently produces a large amount of waste products, but we are always striving to minimize and offset any harm caused by our art.

are your design practices environmentally friendly?

At this time we do not design a-la-carte florals for elopements. We do offer floral designs as part of our micro wedding/family elopement packages for elopements with four or more guests.

Do you design elopement flowers?

Occasionally we source one or two artificial flowers to incorporate into an otherwise fresh flower design to accommodate for seasonal or other limitations. Though artificial flowers are commonly seen as an environmentally friendly option due to their reusability, the truth is that organic materials used once and disposed of is significantly more eco-friendly than plastic flowers used a dozen times that will never biodegrade.
